The first quantitative and comprehensive assessment of the eutrophication status from coastal to offshore French waters was performed within the Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD descriptor 5) for the English Channel, the southern bight of the North Sea, the Celtic Seas, the Bay of Biscay and the Western Mediterranean Sea. Based on a combination of different data sources (in situ, satellite, and modeling products), a fully-integrated dataset was generated over the period 2010–2016. Using the best available knowledge on the eutrophication process and definition, the assessment procedure was implemented considering nutrient pressures, and direct and indirect effects of excessive inputs. The different steps of the assessment were: (i) Establishment of... |

Certain species of the marine diatom genus Pseudo‐nitzschia are responsible for the production of the domoic acid (DA), a neurotoxin that can bioaccumulate in the food chain and cause amnesic shellfish poisoning (ASP) in animals and humans. This study extends our knowledge by reporting on the first observation of the potentially toxic species Pseudo‐nitzschia simulans from this region. One clonal strain of P. simulans was isolated from the East Australian Current and characterized using light and transmission electron microscopy, and phylogenetic analyses based on regions of the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) and the D1–D3 region of the large subunit (LSU) of the nuclear‐encoded ribosomal deoxyribonucleic acid (rDNA), as well as examined for DA... |

Along the French Mediterranean coast, a complex of eight lagoons underwent intensive eutrophication over four decades, mainly related to nutrient over-enrichment from continuous sewage discharges. The lagoon complex displayed a wide trophic gradient from mesotrophy to hypertrophy and primary production was dominated by phytoplankton communities. In 2005, the implementation of an 11 km offshore outfall system diverted the treated sewage effluents leading to a drastic reduction of anthropogenic inputs of nitrogen and phosphorus into the lagoons. Time series data have been examined from 2000 to 2013 for physical, chemical and biological (phytoplankton) variables of the water column during the summer period. Since 2006, total nitrogen and phosphorus... |

Santiago de Cuba bay is an ecosystem eutrophic and vulnerable to FANs events. This work preset the results of monitoring during three year in eight stations located in the less polluted area of the bay, leading to the determination of the possible seasonal distribution and FANs frequency. 117 Phytoplankton species were identifying, which belong to 5 divisions; 28% of these species are reported as potentially toxic and/ or noxious. This zone of the bay classifies as politrophic, heterogeneous and dynamics. It highlights the cysts presence, as well as the occurrence of unialgal "blooms" of Gymnodinium catenatum and Cochlodinium polykrikoides, indicating the presence in the ecosystem of favorable conditions to HABs occurrence with negative impact on the... |

Different ways are explored for presenting 12 years of data on phytoplankton species and toxins in shellfish collected along the French coast and within the framework of the French Phytoplankton Monitoring Network. The advantages and difficulties of aggregating data in different dimensions are discussed. For example, graphs appear suitable only for restricted areas, while mapping is necessary for results on regional or larger scales. Within each of these broad categories, considerable care is required when identifying the appropriate type of information and presentation. |

Considering the filtration capacity of mussels to qualitative particle selection, our study focused directly on ingested species by assessing mussel stomach content of various size classes (1-5 cm) over a year (August 97-June 98) rather than monitoring seawater samples. Different size of mussels (1, 2, 3, 4, 5 cm in length) was sampled monthly from the sides of fish cage floats in Urla-Izmir. Stomach contents were analyzed under microscope and different plankton species were grouped taxonomically. Bacillariophycea, Dinophyceae, Oxyphceae, Euglenophyceae as phytoplanktonic species were observed in the stomach contents of mussels as well as zooplanktonic species including Ciliata, Cladocera, Copepod, bivalve and gastropod larvae. Over the sampling period,... |

The importance of heterotrophic bacteria relative to phytoplankton in the uptake of ammonium and nitrate was studied in Mediterranean coastal waters (Thau Lagoon) during autumn, when the Mediterranean Sea received the greatest allochthonous nutrient loads. Specific inhibitors and size-fractionation methods were used in combination with isotopic N-15 tracers. NO3 (-) and NH4 (+) uptake was dominated by phytoplankton (60 % on average) during the study period, which included a flood event. Despite lower biomass specific NH4 (+) and NO3 uptake rates, free-living heterotrophic bacteria contributed significantly (> 30 %) to total microbial NH4 (+) and NO3 (-) uptake rates in low chlorophyll waters. Under these conditions, heterotrophic bacteria may be... |

The environmental impact of a brown trout farm located in the Grande Rade de Cherbourg (Normandy) is reported. During observations the fish stock evolved within the range of 140 to 350 metric tons. Farm influence was researched on water column through hydrochemistry, phytoplankton, faecal bacteria and, on bottom, through grain size, organic matter, metals, macrobenthos. This report only deals with water column. Except ammonia, no hydrological parameter seems to be affected, even near to the net pens. Phytoplankton and coliform bacteria were not altered. An extra concentration of ammonia was detected at some tens meters from the raft, with favourable conditions. But generally it was impossible to observe it unless close to the farming structure, downward... |

New Caledonia (Southwest Pacific), like all tropical Pacific Island countries, is impacted by weather events, climate change, and local anthropogenic forcing. Strong erosion of particles and dissolved organic matter (DOM) from ultramafic rocks, associated with trace metals dissemination (i.e., nickel, manganese and cobalt), potentially affects lagoon waters and coral reefs surrounding the main island. The CALIOPE (CALedonian Inherent Optical PropErties) cruises were performed along the Eastern Lagoon of New Caledonia (ELNC) (400 km, 13 transects from Bay to open ocean, 51 stations) during contrasted meteorological conditions: a dry period (October 2011), a windy situation (March 2014), and a strong rainy event (March 2016). CDOM absorption and fluorescence... |
